Bali traces its beginnings to 1927, a time when women’s foundation garments were designed to project a flat silhouette. Sara Stein, who worked for a bra manufacturing company, noticed the opportunity to deliver a product that would appeal to women, yet be functional in construction and fit. Using a sewing machine tucked in the corner of her small Brooklyn apartment, she created a different type of brassiere. Her husband, Sam, who was a sales clerk in a bustling clothing store, sold the bras to stores in the area. By 1935 their bras were already legendary, and the company got a new name - the Bali Brassiere Company.
The Steins concern for quality, fit, performance and comfort were key to the company's growth. Within a few years, Sam and Sara Stein were considered the innovators of the foundations industry. They introduced the first cup size brassieres, the first nylon cup, and the first all-cotton brassiere. Each was designed to be comfortable, to enhance shape, and to follow popular Bali slogans "A Style for Every Figure" and "Looks That Nature Intended."
Through the years, Bali has introduced one innovation after another, including their custom fit system, the double support wirefree bra, and more. They've since added panties to the line, including the popular Skimp Skamp brief, and shapewear in the form of briefs, waist cinchers and all-in-ones. Bali is now the number 1 department store brand with continued innovations like the first full support foam plunge bra, the first s-shaped gel strap, patented comfort fasteners, no-poke wires and other advances. Now part of Hanes, Bali recently celebrated their 80th year of making women feel beautiful.
