G.H. Bass & Company was founded in the 1870s when tanner George Henry Bass purchased a local shoe making company in Wilton, Maine. He set out to make the best possible shoe, using quality leather and thorough workmanship. The first Bass moccasin was made in 1906, and although Bass boots were worn by Charles Lindbergh on his historic flight and by Admiral Byrd on his expedition to the Antarctic, the enduring legacy of Bass wouldn't come along until 1936 with the introduction of the very first Bass Weejun.
The loafer was based on a casual shoe from Norway, and the comfortable moccasin of the Native Americans, and named "Weejun" as a contraction of "Norwegian Indian." It soon became the symbol of cool American style, appearing everywhere from the boardroom to the pool hall.
