Dishwasher detergents are composed of four active ingredients. Surfactants, abrasives, oxidizers, and enzymes. Surfactants are chemicals that cut grease by decreasing the surface tension of an oil, making it behave more like saline water and not stick. This makes it easier for it to be wiped away by the streams of water within the machine. Abrasives are compounds that rub against the surface of the dishes and plates to wipe off hard stuck materials, such as dried egg protein.
