Del Monte foods had its origin in the booming 1800s. California was beginning to be populated with canning company that would process fruits and send them east. The Oakland Preserving Company, launched in 1891, was one of the many canning companies. But it had a special difference, it would soon bring about the development of a California wide company known as Calpak, the California Packing Corporation. Calpak, as suddenly the west coast's largest fruit packaging company they could focus on things they could not before. In 1917 they rolled out a new label, it would be called Del Monte and focus on quality and uniformity. Sold on the national stage, Calpak won a great deal of customers in a short time with the Del Monte label. Following the success of their label they relabeled their own company to reflect the pride they had in the Del Monte name. Today, Del Monte is what people think of when people think of fruit.
