History of Lego
In 1916, a humble carpenter from Billund, Denmark opened a woodworking shop in his home town. His name was Ole Kirk Christiansen, and he began earning his living by constructing furniture and homes for farmers of the region with his staff of apprentices. It was in 1924 when a fire started by his two young sons that things began to change for Christiansen. The fire took a life of itself when the fire spread from the woodshavings to his entire woodworking shop. The disaster destroyed his livelihood over the course of a single night, and the next day Ole Kirk began work on its replacement. A larger workshop was constructed upon the ashes of the old, and he began expanding his business. But soon after he was in business again, disaster struck. The great depression took away the business he needed to survive, and so to minimize production costs he began making miniature versions of his products. These miniatures of desks, houses, and ladders were intended as design aids for other carpenters and house builders, but their biggest fans were not his colleagues, but their children.
In 1932, Christiansen set upon this younger market and began focusing entirely on toy construction. Pull toys, wooden cars and trucks, and later, yo-yos. It was in the following decade that plastic became available, and not wishing to be out of date, he began adding plastic toys to his line of products. With the inspiration of some modular toys coming out of a company known as Kiddicraft, Christiansen produced the first set of "automatic binding bricks", or as we know them today: Legos.
While at first a slow seller it would soon rocket in sales once the toy was understood. By 1956, Christiansen had greatly improved the quality and versatility of the plastic bricks. His son, then junior manager of the company, understood the possibility of the toy as a 'system' instead of as a set of individual toys. A system for creative imaginative play, that would give children the ability to build anything. Ole Kirk Christiansen liked the idea, and as a carpenter and builder himself, enjoyed the idea of children learning the pleasure of his trade. This new approach proved to be a winner, and the company's sales skyrocketed. The same year however, Ole Kirk Christiansen died, leaving control of the company to his son who pioneered the approach.
