Macy's - An American Institution

Macy's is more than just a department store, it's an American institution, intricately tied to our values and culture. From the annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, to Miracle on 34th Street, to countless innovations in merchandising and marketing, the history of Macy's is the history of America over the past 150 years. It's the story of a small dry goods store that opened on the corner of 14th Street and 6th Avenue in New York City in 1858 and grew to be one of the largest department store retailers in the world.
Macy's History
After years of unsuccessful business ventures, Rowland Hussey Macy's determination and ingenuity finally paid off with the launch of R.H. Macy & Company in 1858. Adopting a red star as a symbol of success, his dry goods store was a hit by the end of its first full year, and by 1877 it had become a full fledged department store occupying the ground space of 11 adjacent buildings. It continued to grow and to make history, becoming the first retailer to promote a woman to an executive position, the first to establish the one-price system for goods and to advertise prices in newspaper ads, the first to offer colored bath towels, the first to introduce tea bags to the marketplace - the list of Macy's innovations goes on and on.
Of course, Macy's is linked with our seasonal traditions as well - with the time honored celebration of the annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, first organized by immigrant employees in 1924 to help celebrate their new American heritage - the annual flower show to welcome the Spring season beginning in 1946 - and of course the department store Santa as portrayed in Miracle on 34th Street.
Today, Macy's continues to grow and to innovate, offering unbeatable prices, top rated products, one of the widest selections you'll find anywhere - and a new way of operating that reduces impact. As they turn toward operations that are more sensitive to the environment, it's just another step on the path of innovation and progress that has always been Macy's.
