In 1993, Gap decided to convert some of their Gap outlet stores into a less expensive version of the Gap store, tentatively titled the Gap Warehouse. The new store format would include lines of clothes sold at Gap but made with cheaper materials and priced more competitively. The store was a hit, and the Gap decided it should have its own identity. The store was retitled Old Navy, and the stores reopened in 1994. Within two years, the number of Old Navy stores in the country rose from 0 to 131. By the end of the decade, there were 513 stores. Today, there are over 1,000 stores worldwide. Old Navy has become the star brand of Gap due to its commitment to accessible fashion at reasonable prices for everyone.
