Subway was founded in the summer of 1965 in Bridgeport, Connecticut when 17-year old Fred DeLuca went into business to earn money for college tuition. With a $1,000 loan from his family friend Dr. Peter Buck, Fred opened up his first sub shop, called "Pete’s Super Submarines." In 1968 their fifth sandwich shop opened, the first to use the name "Subway." More than four decades later, they're still offering fresh, tasty Subway sandwiches and other pleasing fare to people in Connecticut, but now also to people all over the world.
The Classic B.M.T.
In 1975 Subway's flagship sandwich was born. Named "B.M.T." after the Brooklyn-Manhattan Transit system as a takeoff on the subway theme, it was later referred to as the "biggest, meatiest and tastiest." An old-world favorite with sliced Genoa salami, pepperoni, ham and your choice of fresh vegetables and condiments served on freshly baked bread, it's one of the most popular of Subway's classic sandwiches.
Want to spice things up a bit? How about Subway's Spicy Italian, with more old-world quality in a zesty blend of pepperoni and salami, topped with cheese, oil and vinegar. Did I hear you say hot peppers? However you garnish it, the Spicy Italian is sure to please.
